Tonight from 5-8 p.m. Arny will be preparing for us a classic Italian pasta dish he enjoyed recently in Italy with his family. Our wines are all new to the store, all from South Africa. They include Robertson Winery Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer and DMZ Syrah. The warm and dry Robertson Valley, home to the winery of the same name, is further inland than most vineyards in South Africa, but the Breede River, running through it, provides a cooling influence helping create these smooth, crisp, well-balanced Chenin Blanc and Gewurztraminer wines. There are lots of fruits on the refreshing palate with the Chenin Blanc such as citrus, green apple, honeydew melon, guava, pineapple, apricot, and peach as well as white flowers. The Gewurztraminer is a full-bodied wine with honeysuckle and rose petals in bouquet. It is rich and smooth with beautifully balanced sugar and acid. DeMorgenzon, ‘the morning sun,’ (DMZ) was so named as it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to see the sun because of its high altitude and aspects. The DMZ Syrah has a deep, purple core with rich berry fruit aromas. There are some floral notes in the background, including violets, lavender, and spring blossoms. The palate displays dark fruit flavors, revealing white pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla spice.
